How do you start making your own clothes?
What a great idea to start making your own clothes. In this article I will give you some tips that I hope will help you.
Step by step
You need a few things if you want to make your own clothes. These don’t have to be expensive or much. Just starting out is best, and you’ll find out what you’re missing.
1) Sewing machine. Of course you can do a lot by hand, but especially in the beginning it is not recommended. As a beginner, it is much better to buy a sewing machine. You will have a lot of fun with that. The sewing machine does not have to be new. A second-hand one will often work just as well. If you are unsure about buying one on, for example, eBay, go to a sewing machine shop. They often sell or repair second hand sewing machines. In this way you can buy one that suits your needs and you also have an address for repairs and maintenance.
2) Iron. A normal iron and ironing board will do initially. You can always switch to more expensive steam generators.Â
3) Tools. The basic tools for making clothes are scissors, games (and pin cushion), hand needles, basting thread, a seam ripper, and a chalk or vanishing pen. These tools give you a good base to start, but be inspired by what you find in the haberdashery shop.Â
4) Patterns, knowledge and inspiration. For sewing patterns, you can tap into various platforms. One of the best known, Knipmode, has a website with lots of information. You can also find general sewing tips here. Don’t choose a garment that is too complicated. Just start with a shirt, blouse or tunic.Â
5) Fabric and thread. Based on the pattern, you can buy thread and material. A pattern often comes with a work description. Here you will also find information about the fabric and haberdashery. If you have questions, ask them in the fabric shop. The people who work there are usually happy to help you. Tip: Start with a plain fabric. Stripes, checks and other motifs are more difficult to work with.Â
6) Sewing class. Always recommended! Not only interesting, but also fun. Moreover, you can inspire each other. There are various places where you can take sewing classes, workshops and courses. There is bound to be something suitable for you.
For making your own clothes, the most important thing is to keep it fun! Make clothes that make you happy, after all, you are the one wearing them.Â
